125 gal. tank

Well Magnums come in floor standing models too. Magnums are closer to diatom/micron filters than traditional canister filters. Most of the volume inside a Magnum is unused while traditional canister use pretty much all the volume to hold media of various kinds.
As you can see in the photos, the Magnums use the canister to simply house a single filter cartridge, either a micron filter or a sponge filter. And there is a small container in the middle you can use to fill with activated carbon or a small amount of biological media. Magnums are usually marketed as mechanical and chemical filters. http://www.aquahobby.com/products/e_magnum.php
On the other hand, a traditional canister as you can see in these photos, holds a lot more media which is key to good biological filtration: http://www.eheim.com/base/eheim/inhalte/index6441.html? key=liniendetail_27600_ehen
